Saint Mark Lutheran Church in downtown Salem will host a spring tour visit by the Pacific Lutheran University Chorale from Tacoma on Friday, April 17.
The performance, titled “Dances to Life,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the church, 790 Marion St. NE. Admission is free, but offerings will be accepted.
Interim conductor Lauren Whitham, a PLU alumna and visiting instructor of music, will lead the chorale. The program will span several centuries and genres, including works by Claudio Monteverdi, Felix Mendelssohn and Eric Whitacre.
PLU’s new music department chairman, Dr. John Paul, will provide violin accompaniment as the chorale performs his composition “How I Came to Be.” Paul previously served 13 years as music department chairman at Marylhurst University in the Portland area.
The 36-member chorale includes primarily freshmen and sophomores representing a variety of academic disciplines. The singers appear many times each year in concerts and campus ministry events as well as regional tours and Christmas compact discs. They also have performed for the Washington Music Educators Association and the American Choral Directors Association.
